05 Film Burn

Get the Blu-Ray from Amazon

This coming week we will see the DVD and Blu-Ray releases of Jack Reacher, starring Tom Cruise and based on
the character created by novelist Lee Child. Admittedly, I have never read any of the novels and cannot compare the literary experience to the film. But luckily, we know good movies. So in this article we will look at whether you should buy the Blu-Ray or DVD, rent the title, or leave this film alone all together. Where does Jack Reacher weigh in?

Synopsis from IMDB.com

In an innocent heartland city, five are shot dead by an expert sniper. The police quickly identify and arrest the culprit, and build a slam-dunk case. But the accused man claims he’s innocent and says “Get Jack Reacher.” Reacher himself sees the news report and turns up in the city. The defense is immensely relieved, but Reacher has come to bury the guy. Shocked at the accused’s request, Reacher sets out to confirm for himself the absolute certainty of the man’s guilt, but comes up with more than he bargained for.

The plot of this movie is not new. But then again, when it comes to film there is nothing new under the son. However, the plot is delivered at a steady pace that keeps the viewer engaged (though not so fast as to keep us on the edge of our seat). Action sequences are delivered in a tight style that reminds me of the fight scenes from The Bourne Movies. Tom Cruise delivers a convincing performance as the title character, as usual and despite what I think of him as a person. Do we want a sequel? Yes, but we can wait.

If you rewatch the Bourne movies then this film is definitely rewatchable and you should buy. However, we suggest buying the Blu-Ray since it will carry all of the special features including two audio commentaries and three featurettes. If you liked the Bourne movies, but don’t rewatch, rent the Blu-Ray. But if conspiracy murders and stylized fights are not your thing, leave this film alone. As for our rating of the film, we give it .
