I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times

On the last episode of SyFy’s great new show Defiance, Irisa’s friend and fellow Irathient Sukar was killed in a razor rain storm. Turns out, the piece of shrapnel that struck him was carrying tiny little nanobots that allowed him to raise from the dead. Believing himself on a mission from the god Irzu, he gathered tons of electrical equipment and then beaconed a ship down to Defiance. Believing he was trying to destroy the town Nolan fires several rounds into the intimidating Votan and kills him. Believing in Sukar’s cause, Irisa completes the mission and the ship crashes just outside of Defiance. This events gives us the setup for last night’s episode.

Mhysa – Game of Thrones Season Three Finale

It has been an eventful season this year on HBO’s top rated drama Game of Thrones. The show is based on the epic fantasy saga A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin and each volume of the series is massive. I have had the pleasure of reading the five novels currently composing the collection and eagerly await the next. However, despite having read the books (and I’ve heard other bibliophiles say the same thing), I had no idea where the producers of the show were going to take us for the season three finale. In fact, the show has managed to please those who have read the series just as much as those who have not. But the events of the third book, A Storm of Swords, are something of a delicate matter for those that truly care about this story. How well did HBO do on bringing these events to the screen?

Goodbye Cruel World – Defiance 107

After a week-long wait, new episodes of Defiance have once again started on SyFy. I hope you took the week to get caught up on the six episodes that have already aired. This is possibly the channel’s most ambitious endeavor with an amazingly detailed world, huge special effects, and an integrated MMORPG that affects and is affected by events in the show. We are glad it’s back. So was the wait worth it?

The Rains of Castamere

Longtime fans of Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire know what it’s like to feel loss. We felt our hearts sink when Ned Stark lost his head. That should have been the only clue we needed to know that absolutely no one in George R.R. Martin’s epic saga or HBO’s adaption was safe. Still, we hold on to hope that we will see our favorite characters and houses prosper in the cruel and unforgiving world of Westeros. It has become a running joke among fans of the books in fact. I once saw a meme of George R.R. Martin sitting against a picturesque outdoor setting and enjoying a laugh. The meme read: “Have a favorite character?… Not anymore.” Now, fans of the series, upon seeing that the title of this episode was “The Rains of Castamere”, should have known that this episode was not going to end well. As it turns out, it ended a lot worse.

Buffet Froid – Hannibal 109

What happens when a woman with a severe dissociative illness and skin disease gets loose? This week’s episode of Hannibal is what happens, providing us with yet another gruesomely delightful exploration into the mind of the man that would track down the infamous Hannibal Lecter. Every week, this exploration gets stranger and stranger. Is Special Agent Will Graham going completely insane, or is there something physically wrong with the FBI’s most talented profiler?

Trou Normand – Hannibal 108 Review

If Hannibal Lecter is the most prolific serial killer in the world created by Thomas Harris and recently brought to life on the small screen by Bryan Fuller on NBC, then Special Agent Will Graham is the most prolific profiler. Every week he is presented with strange cases, each one not more disturbing than the last, but uniquely disturbing in their own rights. From people being used to fertilize mushrooms and “transformed” into mock angels to being turned into musical instruments and, this week, totem poles. If there is one thing you can count on from this show, it is a continuous stream of disturbing. The perfect prime time show for horror fans the world over.

Brothers in Arms – Defiance S01E06

Since the first episode of SyFy’s Defiance we knew there was something going on with a strange artifact that was found in the McCawley mines. We know that the town’s old mayor, Nicky Riordan, has an interest in finding it. And we know that it contains some unknown power. But it isn’t until last night’s episode, “Brothers in Arms”, that we have seen it used as the driving force behind any part of the plot. Even then, it was only used to drive a small subplot.

Second Sons – Game of Thrones S03E08

The gears are in motion on HBO’s Game of Thrones and there is nothing anyone can do to stop it. Who will remain standing at the end is yet to be seen. Only one thing is definite, no one is going to escape this show unscathed. This week’s episode, “Second Sons”, focuses largely on the wedding of Tyrion Lannister to Sansa Stark. But we are not left without glimpses into what’s happening in other parts of the world.

It was hard for me to imagine the Hannibal Lecter story being adapted well for TV. What was even harder to imagine was that a network television station would be able to. However, NBC has surprised me week after week with suspenseful plotting, engaging performances, and disturbing crime scenes. Really, the only thing separating Hannibal from an HBO or Showtime level show is the lack of overly coarse language, nudity, and sex. What did the good doctor have in store for us this week?
